The Skylands is New Jersey's northwestern tourism region, covering Sussex, Morris, Warren, Hunterdon and Somerset counties. It's known for family farms, pick-your-own orchards, small historic towns like Chester, Sparta and Frenchtown, and the Delaware Water Gap.
When is the best time to visit the Skylands for food?
Late September through October. Apple and pumpkin picking are in full swing, farms host harvest dinners, and fall color usually peaks in mid-to-late October. Summer is best for farm stands and berries; winter for fireside dining.
How far is the Skylands from New York City?
Most Skylands towns are about an hour to ninety minutes by car from Manhattan, which makes the region an easy day trip or weekend for a long lunch, a farm visit and a scenic drive home.
